A USCIS notice arrived: 7 steps before you file it away
A USCIS letter may be a receipt, an appointment, a request for evidence, or a decision. This checklist helps you review what matters before storing it.

First, identify what you received
Read the heading and every page. USCIS may send receipt notices, biometrics or interview appointments, requests for evidence such as an RFE, and decisions. Each notice calls for a different response, and some include a deadline or a specific filing address.
Check the name, address, A-Number when shown, related form, and notice date. If you find an error or the notice may carry significant legal consequences, do not guess: follow the document's instructions and seek authorized legal advice when appropriate.
The seven-step checklist
USCIS identifies each application or petition with a unique 13-character receipt number: three letters followed by ten numbers. Related filings—for example, Forms I-130, I-485, and I-765—may have different numbers and should be tracked separately.
- Identify the notice type and the form it concerns.
- Check the name, address, A-Number, and other personal details.
- Record the receipt number without posting it on social media.
- Calendar the notice date, every appointment, and the exact response deadline.
- Scan every page and keep the original and envelope.
- Check each receipt number separately in Case Status Online or your USCIS account.
- Respond using the address, format, and instructions printed on the notice.
“A USCIS notice is more than mail: it may contain the number, date, or instruction that protects your filing.”
If the portal shows a notice that never arrived
USCIS provides an online non-delivery inquiry. Before submitting it, check Case Status Online and your digital account. The official tool says a receipt notice should normally arrive within 30 days after filing with a Service Center or Lockbox, but it also asks filers to wait at least 60 days before inquiring about a recently filed application or petition.
An RFE, NOID, appearance notice, or decision with possible immigration consequences deserves careful review. BaseviSolutions can support document organization but does not replace an immigration attorney.
