Did you move? Changing your address with USPS does not update USCIS

Mail forwarding does not change the address on file with USCIS, and USPS does not forward USCIS mail. Update both systems separately.

Two separate updates

USCIS states that changing your address with USPS does not change the address on file with USCIS and that USPS does not forward USCIS mail. Update both systems separately to reduce the risk of missing notices or documents.

In general, noncitizens in the United States must report an address change to USCIS within 10 days of moving. The official page identifies exceptions for A and G visa holders and Visa Waiver Program visitors.

How to protect every pending case

USCIS recommends using the Enterprise Change of Address tool inside an online account. If you have pending requests, enter the receipt number for each one so the change can be applied correctly. Related Forms I-130, I-485, and I-765 may each have a different receipt number.

  • Update USCIS and USPS separately.
  • Include every pending receipt number.
  • Save the confirmation and a screenshot or copy of the submission.
  • Review your profile and each linked case afterward.
  • For consular processing, also review Department of State or NVC instructions.
“An address change does not end with USPS: USCIS must receive the update directly.”

Situations with special procedures

People with filed, pending, or approved VAWA, T, U, certain related cases, or an I-751 abuse waiver must follow special address-protection procedures. Do not use the general process without reviewing that official section.

A sponsor who filed Form I-864 and remains subject to the support obligation must also file Form I-865 within 30 days of moving. If a notice or document was already sent to the old address, use the appropriate official non-delivery tool or contact USCIS as directed.
